Project background

Verulamium Park is one of the largest urban parks in Hertfordshire. It hosts a wealth of activities and occupies the site of the ancient Roman City of Verulamium, the remains of which lie preserved beneath the ground. The Landscape Partnership in conjunction with St. Albans District Council are currently working on developing a master plan for the park to preserve, enhance and improve this valuable asset and ultimately exploit the enormous potential the site contains. This blog is designed to elicit opinions regarding the park and to keep you up to date with the progress of the project. We welcome and appreciate your comments so please feel free to drop us a line at any time...

A "Missing Link" Cycle Path from the Alban Way to the City Centre!

The much-used Alban Way cycle path peters out close to the city, meaning cyclists, including those with small children, need to take to the roads for the final mile into the City Centre. Although Prospect Road is traffic calmed, it is busy and with parked cars on both sides it makes for a somewaht hazardous approach to Westminster Lodge. I'm not sure what could be done to improve this access. However, once at Westminster Lodge the obvious safe route to the city centre is across the park to the Fighting Cocks and up the hill towards the Abbey. Currently the position about cycling through the park appears to be ambiguous with no signs to either deter it or allow it. A purpose built cycle path through the park to connect the Alban Way direct to the City Centre, complete with signage to encourage its use, would be a great asset.

And having made this journey (from Welwyn) this morning, more cycle racks at the Abbey end of the market area would be much appreciated too!

Additional suggestions

Play Areas
The play area is a bit down market. In may parks in Essex, Switzerland, Vienna everything is made from natural wood which makes the look much nice and has less of an impact on the environment. Please lest follow this example

Cycle paths
Cycling on the roads is increasingly dangerous. What is really need is a dedicated cycle path around the park that provides linkage between : Gorehambury, Westminster Lodge, Top of Park (to Waitrose), St Michaels

Inn on the Park
Give some thought to this. The service is poor, opening ours insufficient but the environment is great
